Foreword

This is part three of a gaze into the World of the shooter gamer. Part III continues to evaluate the offerings with updated information. As done in the previous reports, part III takes a look at the past provides some information of the present and a gives a glimpse of what the future may bring for the online shooter gaming enthusiasts.

This first of this series was written in Nov of 2007, part II was posted in March of 2008.

Past

In Part III we are on the brink of a New Year and at the end of a year that has seen an increase in new game offerings the likes of which overwhelm years of the past.

Wiki list 781 new Console games of 2008, however their list is only a partial list IGN puts the total at over 1700 which is almost twice the amount released in 2007. Exact number of new games across all three major consoles I have yet to find.. Suffice it to say.. It’s a Schitload!!! Little wonder one interesting statistic I did find was that only 6% of the number of games released actually makes money. More evidence that the game producers should be concentrating more on quality than quantity.. But eh! Like they would listen to us?

So for the year 2008 the choices are vast. However knowing the small percentage of successful games means the majority of the offerings are pure garbage. Little wonder you can always find a huge bin at any department store full of game titles for every console that don’t sell at the asking price of a mere $5. Junk is junk no matter the price.

For the 6% that do reap profits, those profits are immense.. Billions upon billions of dollars are being reaped from the few titles that sit on top of the pile. One winner can give a game developer company enough revenue to put out another 1000 worthless titles out in the hopes that one of them will become successful. For us the one’s that pay the way, when it comes to knowing which one’s are worth the price we keep each other well informed. The communities we involve ourselves with leaves little to chance in terms of being aware of what games are the cream of the crop. In short, it doesn’t take long for the net to broadcast to the gamer world what title is good without the need to list the scrap.

In this report this knowledge means I don’t have to tell you which games offered last year were good.. All of us already know this information. Besides the retailers make it easy... Good games don’t go down in price... simple enough.. Aside from new releases price at above $50 in an attempt to slide one by the buyer... all a person needs to do is look at the release date... if the game was released months ago yet still cost above $50 then chances are it’s a winner.. It takes quite a while for good titles to drop in price if ever... usually the price drop occurs only due to the same title’s release of a new version. And sometimes, not even then... Call of Duty 4 is still selling for top price despite its age and regardless that a new version is being offered. Unlike the number of titles you can find in the bargain bin priced far below their new release cost, many of which aren’t even a month old.

Present

Despite the odds the year 2009 will again see an unparallel increase in new game offerings and continue along the lines of the status quo, the percentage of new titles that are worth the ridiculous high cost of $59. Retail will be a small amount. Those that make the grade however will NOT be without the usual problems which every title has included as the “price we pay”. For the title that gets noticed, gets bought by us, the end users, the attention it receives means the game will require a large amount of mending. Again this is due to the mind set of quantity over quality.. basically toss a bunch out the door and wait and see which ones make it.. Once the consumer decides on which title they like, only then will we spend the time and money to attempt to actually get the game to work the way we said it would.

Congratulations on the purchase of your new game at our high retail price.. Please download Patch 1.9.9.9 in order to play this game. *Warning this game can not be played prior to the latest patch upgrade. Future

Conclusion, the choices are becoming too many to list, the smart buyer does not become the guinea pig. Lower the odds before spending your money, the vast amount of web sites that are dedicated to reviewing and researching the titles being offered are a tool the online gamer should take full advantage of. They aren’t always in line with what an individual may agree with, everyone has different taste and likes and dislikes, however giving the large chance that buying a game you know little about will leave you disappointed as well as waste your money, reading what others have to report as to the worth of a new title certainly can’t hurt in terms of finding the right game that fits your opinions. When researching a title don’t relay on only one sites review of a game, be aware that reviews can and often do get posted by promoters of the game developer as well as the chance other reviews may be biased due to the sites sponsorship.

Conclusion

When it comes to what title to choose the best way to lower the choice is to listen to your friends, clan mates, and fellow gamers and continue to share the opinions offered between each other. Many of us play online due in large to being able to play a game with the friends, mates and fellowship of gamers will know and like, which game to play then becomes a choice the community of gamers you engage with in online gaming  activities make in agreement between one another.
